Press Release : UNESCO Validates the Listing of the Caftan as Moroccan Heritage on its Representative List

The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), validated this Wednesday in India the file submitted by the Kingdom of Morocco for the inscription of the Moroccan Caftan as a UNESCO World Heritage.

This international recognition culminates the efforts of the Kingdom of Morocco under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, who has consistently shown His High Solicitude towards Moroccan culture and the safeguarding of Moroccan cultural heritage.

Morocco submitted a comprehensive file including important elements that highlight the richness and evolution of the intangible cultural heritage associated with the Caftan. This file was overseen by both the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication and the Permanent Delegation of Morocco to UNESCO in Paris.

The Moroccan Caftan is more than just a garment; it is a living symbol of Moroccan identity, passed down from mother to daughter, and from master to apprentice, for over eight centuries. The Caftan also embodies an exceptional technical and aesthetic heritage, celebrated worldwide.

The file was meticulously prepared, detailing the crafts and skills, social functions, and the communities that carry this tradition, following a comprehensive and non-politicized approach.

With this international recognition, the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication wishes to thank all Moroccan artisans and traditional craftsmen for their significant efforts, as well as the Moroccan civil society both at home and abroad, who advocate for Moroccan cultural heritage.

L'UNESCO valide l'inscription du Caftan en tant que patrimoine marocain sur sa liste représentative

Le Comité intergouvernemental de sauvegarde du patrimoine culturel immatériel, relevant de l'Organisation des Nations Unies pour l'éducation, la science et la culture (UNESCO), a validé ce mercredi en Inde le dossier soumis par le Royaume du Maroc pour l'inscription du Caftan marocain en tant que patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO.

Cette reconnaissance internationale vient couronner les efforts du Royaume du Maroc sous la conduite de Sa Majesté le Roi Mohammed VI, que Dieu l'assiste, qui n'a cessé d'accorder Sa Haute Sollicitude à la culture marocaine et à la sauvegarde du patrimoine culturel marocain.

Le Maroc a soumis un dossier complet comprenant des éléments importants qui mettent en lumière la richesse et l'évolution du patrimoine culturel immatériel lié au Caftan.

Ce dossier a été supervisé par le Ministère de la Jeunesse, de la Culture et de la Communication, ainsi que par la Délégation Permanente du Maroc auprès de l'UNESCO à Paris.

Le Caftan marocain est plus qu'un simple vêtement ; c'est un symbole vivant de l'identité marocaine, transmis de mère en fille, et de maître à élève, depuis plus de huit siècles.

Le Caftan incarne également un héritage technique et esthétique exceptionnel, célébré dans le monde entier.

Ce dossier a été élaboré avec minutie, décrivant en détail les métiers et savoir-faire, les fonctions sociales et les communautés détentrices de cette tradition, selon une approche globale et apolitique.

Par cette reconnaissance internationale, le Ministère de la Jeunesse, de la Culture et de la Communication tient à remercier tous les artisans et maâlems (maîtres-artisans) marocains pour leurs efforts considérables, ainsi que la société civile marocaine, tant au Maroc qu'à l'étranger, qui défend le patrimoine culturel marocain.
